  1. Purpose of the immersion module Top

    The main objectives of the immersion module are:

    • To develop basic but essential practical Japanese communication skills that are relevant and immediately transferable to business activities
    • To acquire business expertise and management skills that are vital for doing business in Japan
    • To deepen participants' understanding of the local business culture and customs
    • To develop a business plan outlining a clear business strategy for the sponsoring company in Japan
  2. Organiser Top

    A 30-week Immersion module in Japan will be organised by Waseda University. Founded in 1882, Waseda University is one of the most prestigious private universities in Japan and the most internationally recognised universities in Japan. Being associated with Waseda University is a powerful asset for ETP participants as they enter the Japanese business community.

    Waseda University offers a wide range of resources from campus facilities to academic information. Sports facilities, computer rooms, medical centres, and dorms make campus life comfortable for ETP participants, while access to professors, library facilities, and academic activities held on campus help to expand their academic knowledge. Waseda University’s diverse student body and extensive business networks provide numerous opportunities for participants to build their business and social networks.

    The ETP at Waseda University will be organised entirely at Waseda University as a university-wide project. The Japanese Language Component of ETP will be delivered by the Centre for Japanese Language; one of the largest Japanese language education institutions in Japan. The Business and Management Component will be delivered by the Graduate School of Commerce and Waseda Business School, which operates one of the largest MBA programmes in Japan.

  3. Detailed curriculum Top

    Introductory language component

    The aim of this component is to provide the basic survival language skills and the ability to produce simple sentences

    Intensive language training component

    This component aims to develop four essential language skills: (1) listening; (2) reading; (3) oral; and (4) writing, with a focus on business communication.

    Business Networking and Social Activities

    In order to familiarise ETP participants with Japanese culture and introduce them to a variety of business networks, numerous activities will be arranged, including company visits, networking events and home stays.

  4. Benefits for the sponsoring company Top

    As a culmination of the Business and Management Component, participants will develop a Business Plan that outlines a clear and realistic strategy for their sponsoring companies’ businesses in the Japanese market. Participants will receive continuous support for this during their coursework, through individual consultations with the Academic Coordinator, and mentor sessions with experienced business professionals arranged especially for this purpose.

    Sponsoring companies will benefit from in-house expertise on Japanese management, markets, the economy and a deeper comprehension of their sector and product in Japan.
